ABOUT SYSTASIS

SYSTASIS is an online periodical initiated and edited by the members of the Antiquity Society of classical philologists in Skopje, Macedonia.
The name of the periodical, SYSTASIS, which means 'a composition', comes from the great discovery made by our Professor M. D. Petruševski, who in 1990 published in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, his translation of Aristotle's Poetics (Περὶ ποητικῆς). He emended the phrase in Aristotle's definition of tragedy usually known as κάϑαρσις παϑημάτων to σύστασις πραγμάτων, i.e. 'a composition of acts' that cause fear and compassion, the essential characteristics of tragedy.
That the composition of the components of a deed makes each literary genre be itself, was elaborated on theoretical and philosophical grounds by Professor Elena Koleva, in her work 'The composition of Acts', published in Ohrid, 1992. In this book, she improved the linguistic discovery of M. D. Petruševski on literary theoretical grounds.
With the beginning of the editing the periodical SYSTASIS which is intended to appear twice a year, the members of the Editorial Board wish to establish a composition of contributions offered by classical philologists, historians, archaeologists, philosophers who work in the fields of Ancient Greece and Rome and the cultural and historical heritage of these civilisations in our country. Besides the scholarly works and articles offered by specialists, the Journal welcomes contributions in the field of didactics of classical disciplines, as well as contributions by younger students from Institutes of classics and farther afield.
